We’re excited to present the latest edition of Minds Behind VICT3R, featuring Mathieu Vinken (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) – Partner at VICT3R, and Coordinator of both the ASPIS cluster and the ONTOX project. A huge thank you to Mathieu for sharing his expertise and perspectives with us. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about his role and contributions to our work!

  • 1. Can you tell us about yourself and the VUB?
I am Mathieu Vinken, full professor affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel-Belgium (VUB). I have a background in pharmaceutical and toxicological sciences. The research of my VUB team is situated in the fields of in vitro toxicology, experimental hepatology and space toxicology.

  • 2. What specific skills or insights from your past experience do you think will contribute most to VICT3R’s goals and innovation?
In addition to contributing to the VICT3R research, I support setting up scientific collaborations with other consortia and relevant societies as well as reaching out to regulatory agencies. Furthermore, I lead the training activities and the establishment of a young investigator platform in VICT3R. All of this feeds from the experience and know-how built up as coordinator in the ONTOX project and the ASPIS cluster and involvement in other European projects.

  • 3. What do you see as the most exciting synergies between VICT3R and ASPIS, and what could be the most transformative outcome of this collaboration?
While ASPIS is focused on replacement of animal testing, VICT3R will contribute to reduction of animal experimentation. Joining forces between both initiatives therefore will provide a considerable contribution to the implementation of the 3Rs principles.
